Kharghuli is a historic and scenic locality on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, known for its cultural heritage and peaceful surroundings. We, the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod began the Northeast mission in 1979 at Ambagaon and gradually expanded to many parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura through schools, hostels, pastoral work, women empowerment, and social service. Due to the hardships of travel and communication in Northeast India, the congregation established the Delegation House at Joypur, Kharghuli in 1995, which later became an important centre for their mission activities.
Despite many struggles such as poor transport, floods, ethnic violence, financial difficulties, and lack of facilities, the sisters courageously continued their missionary service with faith and dedication. The Women Development Centre at Kharghuli was started in 1997 for women empowerment and social development. Delegation II officially began in 1999, giving greater responsibility to the Northeast mission. New missions were opened in places like Itanagar, Kaying, Bijni, Changsari, Laluk, and Jiribam, while schools, hostels, and formation houses steadily expanded.
In 2006, the Guwahati Delegation was officially raised to the status of a Province, marking a historic milestone for the congregation in Northeast India. The Province continued to grow through formation programmes, professions, retreats, leadership meetings, social ministries, and educational institutions. Important initiatives included the RHoSS Shelter Home for transgender persons, ministries for differently-abled children, women empowerment projects, and relief work during Assam floods and the Manipur ethnic crisis.
The Province experienced both challenges and blessings. Through prayer, sacrifice, unity, and missionary zeal, We, the Sisters of the Cross, Guwahati Province, continued to serve the people of Northeast India with courage and commitment.
