Mother Claudine Echernier

Foundress of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod

Mother Claudine Echernier, a woman of deep faith and unwavering love for the Cross of Christ, is the foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod, which was established in 1838 in Chavanod, a small village in Haute-Savoie, South-East France.

She was born on 29th May 1801 at a place called Vers le Creux in Feternes, a humble village in Chablais, into a devout and prayerful family. Nurtured in simplicity, prayer, and love for God, she was drawn from an early age to the Cross of Christ, finding in it the strength and courage to dedicate her life entirely to God.

Moved by compassion and a fervent desire to serve, Mother Claudine devoted herself to the poor, the suffering, and the marginalized, making her life a living testimony of Christ’s love. Through her vision, holiness, and dedication, she founded a congregation committed to walking in the footsteps of Jesus, serving those in need with humility, faith, and unwavering trust in God’s providence.

Fr. Peter Mermier
(1790-1862)

Father Peter Mermier

Founder of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod

Fr. Peter Mermier was born on 28 August 1790 at Savoy in France. From his childhood he was deeply prayerful and had a strong desire to serve God and people. He was ordained a priest on 16 March 1817. As a priest, he travelled to many villages preaching missions, teaching catechism, and renewing the faith of the people. His simple life, kindness, humility, and zeal for souls attracted many people towards God.

Fr. Peter Mermier was greatly inspired by the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales, especially his teachings on gentleness, humility, patience, and love. Realizing the need for dedicated missionaries to spread the Gospel, he founded the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales (MSFS) in 1838 at Annecy, France. The congregation was established to preach parish missions, educate the youth, and bring people closer to God through loving service and pastoral care. With the same missionary spirit, Fr. Peter Mermier also encouraged the foundation of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod (SCC) in 1838 at Chavanod, France, together with Mother Claudine Echernier. The congregation was started to care for the poor, educate children, nurse the sick, and help in the missionary activities of the Church. The Sisters continue this mission today in many parts of the world through education, social work, pastoral ministry, and health care.

Fr. Peter Mermier was a visionary missionary and a man of deep faith and prayer. He believed that missionaries should proclaim the Gospel with love, simplicity, patience, and zeal. His life became a source of inspiration to many priests, sisters, and lay people. He passed away on 30 September 1862, but his spirit and mission continue through the ministries of the MSFS Fathers and the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod throughout the world.
